Books in the Wild: Special Delivery Edition

April 17, 2013

Many of us have fond memories of The Bookmobile. I remember visiting the “library on wheels” when they were building a new library in my neighborhood, and of course the bookmobile is sometimes the only library at all in some communities. So this month we’re featuring the beloved bookmobile! If you missed our recent Books in the Wild posts, here are the links to catch up with our Spring Cleaning Edition, Dog Edition and Cat Edition.

And now, to the Bookmobiles!

BITW Blue Book Mobile Truck The most adorable bookmobile!

And for anyone who is an artist as well as a fan of bookmobiles, here’s a link to a very cool way to “build your own bookmobile” from author and illustrator Bob Staake! Click through and download your own.

My library now depends on USPS to deliver books, a departure from the pack horse librarians of Kentucky, part of a WPA program to deliver books to secluded areas, which I learned about in Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin.

Lived on a RR (rural route) as a kid on a small farm, age 6-7, the size was somewhere between a delivery van and a very small school bus…to me a castle on wheels!
