Gift Guide: For the Littlest Readers

December 5, 2012

Throughout the rest of the year, we’ll be running occasional book-themed gift guides for different types of people on your holiday list.  For the youngest readers on your list, here are some of our favorite board books, perfect for newborns and toddlers, and great gifts for parents who are looking for something to keep their little ones entertained.

Peas on Earth by Todd H. Doodler combines silly fun with the important messages of peace, harmony, getting along with others, and being green, all of which make this board book a great gift throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season.  Younger kids will love the colorful art and the pop-up of peas dancing on the earth at the end, and older kids and parents will get a kick out of the peas/peace references.

Tad Hills’ Duck & Goose books are always my go to gifts for baby showers, birthdays and holidays, and now readers can celebrate Christmas with Duck & Goose, It’s Time For Christmas!.  Who can resist these adorable feathered friends as they attempt to decorate their Christmas tree but get a little distracted along the way!?

Another favorite this holiday is The Little Blue Box of Bright and Early Board Books by Dr. Seuss which includes the board book editions of the classic Dr. Seuss titles Hop on Pop; Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!; Ten Apples Up On Top!; and The Shape of Me and Other Stuff in a fancy little box with a handle.  Perfect for families on the go and a great way to introduce babies to Dr. Seuss early!  If you have older children who love The Big Blue (and Red, Green, and Purple) Book of Beginner Books, try this for their younger siblings.

In A Book of Sleep by Il Sung Na, join owl on his moonlit journey as he watches all the other animals settle in for the night: some sleep standing up, while some sleep on the move! Some sleep peacefully alone, while others sleep all together, huddled close.  Absolutely gorgeous illustrations and a sweet bedtime story make this the perfect book to read at bedtime all snuggled up with your little one.

Lastly, this summer we published a board book edition of one of my favorite Leo Lionni books, Inch by Inch.  The story of a clever little inch worm who uses his skill at measuring things to wiggle his way out of a dangerous situation with a nightingale is such a fun read, and equally fun is the search on every brightly colored page for the hero of the story, the tiny green inch worm.  A great gift for little readers and adult fans of the marvelous and award winning Leo Lionni.
