The View from Monday-New titles available on February 28th

February 27, 2012

It’s Monday and here are some of our picks from the many new books that will be available at your favorite bookstore or library tomorrow.

Secrets of the Garden by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld, illustrated by Priscilla Lamont

I’m seeing more front yards being converted into gardens every day.  This is the perfect introduction to what is happening ‘behind the scenes’ in those vegetable patches.  Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld does a great job explaining food webs and food chains in this simple and charming book. –Dandy

Out of this World by Amy Sklansky, Illustrated by Stacey Schuett

Now that NASA has put on hold manned space flight, we are left to occasional Hubble photos or our imaginations to ponder our amazing universe. Of course, all we have to do on a clear night is step outside and look up to appreciate the sheer beauty and poetry of the constellation of stars and planets.Thankfully, we have a new picture book that captures Space in all its glory: OUT OF THIS WORLD by Amy Sklansky, with illustrations by Stacey Schuett. The book is cleverly laid out: open the book and one finds a series of two-page spreads with artwork in four color, bordered by a poem on one side and factoid on the other.  Although nonfiction, OUT OF THE WORLD reads like a story about a young kids imagining blasting off into the far reaches of outer space and how they’d prepare themselves for the journey.  It’s truly a fun ride and visual treat. The book is geared for kids ages 5-9 and a natural for Poetry Month and of course, budding astronomers. –Tim

Lawn Mower Magic by Lynne Jonell, illustrated by Brandon Dorman

My 5 & 6 year old boys were riveted by this follow up to Hamster Magic.  They loved the action and humor, cheering the Willow kids as they try to wrangle a rogue lawn mower full of magic. –Dandy

Goofballs #1: The Crazy Case of Missing Thunder by Tony Abbott

A terrific new mystery series for the chapter book reader–four friends who solve mysteries and have lots of fun doing it, who could ask for more? Bonus! written by Tony Abbott of Secrets of Droon fame and many other great reads, and an added bonus, Goofballs #2: The Startling Story of the Stolen Statue is being released at the same time!

BZRK by Michael Grant

Think “The Bourne Identity meets Hunger Games….with science”, and you’re off on a heart-pounding adventure that you’ll find hard to put down. BZRK will leave you saying “how long do I have to wait for book 2”? (coming in October 2012). Michael Grant, well known for his GONE series gives us another thrill a minute read with enough twists to keep you reading late into the night. If you missed it you can check out Michael’s recent interview with RAoR here. -Kate

Our school has its own garden where they grow produce for our cafeteria and plants to give to moms on Mother’s Day. I imagine the students will be very interested in, Secrets of the Garden. I’ll be looking for it!
