12 Days of Holiday Gift Book Suggestions – Day 11

December 22, 2011

It’s Day 11 of our 12 Days of Holiday Gift Book suggestions, and today Nic reviews and recommends the latest novel from Printz Honor recipient A. S. King.  Everybody Sees the Ants is a great book to recommend to fans of  A. S. King’s earlier novels Please Ignore Vera Dietz and The Dust of 100 Dogs, and to fans of John Green’s novels.

I see the ants.

I see them in the Vets that haunt the National Mall, in the teenagers hanging out at the Caribou Coffee and in the Alzheimer patient that wanders my neighborhood.  They are all good people, they are all dealing with the things that life has thrown at them in the best way they know.  They could all use a friend like Lucky Linderman to help them find their way.

Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King is a book to devour in one sitting.  It is a book for the bullied, the bullies and the hopeful.  It is a book that can’t help but shout from the shelf to be read again.  It is a book you will think about for months after reading it.  It is a book you will want to share with everyone in your life.  Lucky isn’t lucky at all, he is dealing with a bully at school and a crumbling family life at home.  But he is a hopeful teen, he realizes that he can make the situation better – all he needs is a little help from some unlikely friends and, of course, the ants.

This is a book that will lift your spirits and restore your faith in humanity.  It is a book that will make you shout out of frustration, and out of hope.  It is a book that will make you laugh out loud and cry tears of sadness on the page.  This is a book to remember.

It’s so good to see books available for inspiration for young adults. This sounds great for older middle school and high school. Thanks for telling about it!
