12 Days of Holiday Gift Suggestions – Day 1

December 8, 2011

Keeping with our Holiday Gift theme for this week and next, we give you Day 1 of our “12 Days of Holiday Gift Suggestions”, with a post from our colleague Deanna, sharing her thoughts about the recently released Jim Henson biography and Sesame Street Books.

If your family enjoyed the Muppets Movie as much as mine did, you may be looking for gift items in the Muppet/Sesame Street oeuvre. Of that there is no shortage! Here are a few books to consider along with your  Elmo toys and your Muppet – themed nail polish (yes, this really exists).

Jim Henson: The Guy Who Played with Puppets was released this fall and is a perfect gift for the slightly older child (say 6-ish to your age) who wants to know more about  the creative mind behind the Muppets. Kids non-fiction maven Kathleen Krull (Lives of….series) provides the text while the prolific duo Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher (My Many Colored Days) beautifully illustrate.

For the youngest fans, Elmo’s Little Dreidel provides a simple view of Chanukah from a non-Jewish perspective. It does make you wonder what, if any, religion Elmo adheres to.  My last suggestion is a classic that I remember from my childhood: The Monster at the End of this Book. Featuring adorable Grover at his most obtuse, the reading of this book (and its companion, Another Monster at the End of this Book) never fails to elicit excited cries from children as they fight with Grover over turning to the next page.

Happy Holidays and Mahna Mahna!

We did love The Muppets, but we’re all a little old for those books, I’m sad to say.

The Monster at the End of This Book sounds hilarious! I might get it for my sister. =)

Team Johnson/Fancher are such a great choice to bring Henson’s story to life!
