Summertime, and the reading is easy.

August 1, 2011

I was lucky enough to grow up just “down the street” from a beach; we learned to swim, build sand castles and to love everything about the sun, sand, salt water and summer. The smell of the ocean still conjures up fond childhood memories. I found out recently that August is “National Beach Month”, and in that spirit we at Random Acts of Reading bring you a selection of our favorite books about the summer, beaches and ponds, and some of their creatures.

For the preschoolers, there are the delightful board books, SUMMER, BEACH BABIES WEAR SHADES and the just released SNEETCHES ON BEACHES.

For beginning readers, and fans of the hit PBS TV Show “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That” there are several books about ocean and pond life: A WHALE OF A TALE, CLAM-I-AM, WISH FOR A FISH and WOULD YOU RATHER BE A POLLYWOG.

And of course, beauty and danger are abundant in National Geographic’s Early Reader books featuring SHARKS and DOLPHINS.

For a summer-themed chapter book read, there are SUMMER PONY, JULIAN’S GLORIOUS SUMMER,

and two Magic Tree House titles, STAGE FRIGHT ON A SUMMER NIGHT and SUMMER OF THE SEA SERPENT.

And you just know that Nate the Great has an adventure for every season, so NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG is a perfect choice for your young mystery reader.

And as luck would have it, for the graphic novel crowd there’s BABYMOUSE BEACH BABE and though it’s not a beach story, it is still summer in LUNCH LADY AND THE SUMMER CAMP SHAKEDOWN.

Two delightful summer vacation stories are found in SEAGLASS SUMMER and SUMMERHOUSE TIME.

For the reader who just can’t get enough real life information about nature at the beach, National Geographic’s Jump Into Science series offers SUN, SAND and STARS.

And when the day is done and you need a bedtime story don’t forget about HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION—a rollicking good read from Mark Teague, or Faith Ringgold’s lovely TAR BEACH, a family story filled with fond memories of a city summer and nights spent on the roof, close to the stars.

Happy Summer and Happy National Beach Month to everyone! We hope all of our readers are having a wonderful summer wherever you choose to spend it. Please share your favorite summer books with us in the comments section.

And don’t forget the sunscreen!

Sneetches is one of my all-time favorite Seuss stories!! A classic.

And my boys always loved anything in the Magic Tree House or Nate the Great series.

    Nice recommendations!
