Team Comic Con 2011!

July 29, 2011

Today, we’re so pleased to share a guest post from some of our friends in marketing and publicity who were lucky enough to attend last week’s San Diego Comic Con. Anyone who has been to the show knows what a fun, outrageous scene it is, and our team shares just a few fun highlights from their time working the show. We hope you enjoy!

Random House Children’s Books Team Comic-Con is fresh back from our whirlwind trip to San Diego’s Comic-Con International! It was another year of exciting in-booth activities, giveaways of some of this fall’s most hotly-anticipated books, and always-entertaining author panels and signings.

{The calm before the storm. The RHCB booth is ready for Comic-Con 2011!}

We started our “con” on Wednesday with Preview Night—an evening that gives a smaller set of attendees the opportunity to check out the show floor before the official opening on Thursday morning. This is when many of the exhibitor’s highlight exclusive giveaways. For our part, we shared special editions of The Emerald Atlas signed by author John Stephens.

Thursday through Sunday, Random House Children’s Books had a full schedule of events including appearances by Christopher Paolini (author of Inheritance, coming November 8th), John Stephens (author of The Emerald Atlas), and Matthew Holm (co-creator of Babymouse and Squish).

Fans stopped by our booth to receive advanced copies of upcoming fall books including Tamora Pierce’s Mastiff (Random House, On sale October 25th), N. D. Wilson’s Ashtown Burials #1: The Dragon’s Tooth (Random House, On sale August 23rd), and Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie’s Unleashed (Delacorte Press, On sale November 22nd).

While there were many exciting moments at the convention, some particular highlights were . . .

Modelland Cover Reveal

Following Tyra Banks’s appearance on Good Morning America earlier that morning to reveal the cover of her debut fantasy novel Modelland (Delacorte Press, On sale September 13th) live from Times Square, we held our own cover reveal featuring former contestants from America’s Next Top Model dressed as “Bellas” (characters from the pages of Modelland). The Bellas helped RHCB staff hand out advanced copies of the book and also adorned fans with “Smize” eye masks (see below for pictures).

Christopher Paolini’s “Epic Fantasy” panel & signings

Inheritance cycle fans were thrilled about the upcoming November 8th release of the final book in the series Inheritance. Many Paolini fans turned out to see Christopher appear alongside such fellow epic fantasy giants as George R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, and more on their “Epic Fantasy” panel.

Christopher’s solo signing on Friday afternoon drew another large crowd of fans young and old. People at the beginning of the line had arrived at 10:00 a.m. to ensure their opportunity to meet Christopher (his signing began at 2:30)!

Christopher also spent some time in our booth to create two sketches that are being raffled off to fans. We received over 600 entries throughout the weekend!

As always, we had a great time interacting with fans of our books and introducing new readers to many of our beloved authors and series. It was particularly exciting to be able to hand an advanced copy of Tamora Pierce’s upcoming conclusion to the Beka Cooper trilogy Mastiff to her loyal fans—this often elicited tears, jumping up and down, and hugs to RHCB staffers on a few occasions.

For those who have never attended before, we highly recommend checking out the scene at Comic-Con International. It is truly unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere. You can already start preparing to attend next year’s show (July 12 – 15, 2012) on the Comic-Con website. We hope to see you there!

    Your Random House team was awesome at Comic-Con.
    I wanted to send a special thanks to Rachel of Team Comic-Con. She and I talked books and she recommended the Maze Runner. I ended up buying the book at your booth and LOVE it. I’m recommending it on my blog as well as to my friends. I also was the lucky recipient of Unleashed and the Game of Thrones. I’m looking forward to these as well!
    Thanks Rachel!
