Book Expo America: A Behind-the-Scenes Look!
This post comes to us from Bobbie, our group’s sales associate and all-around dynamo!
During the week of May 23, the book world celebrated it’s annual event, Book Expo America at the Javits Center in New York City. There, just as in years past, authors, publishers, agents, booksellers, and readers, came together to share their knowledge, forthcoming titles, predictions for the industry’s future, and, of course, a love for all things books!
Being a recently added member to the RHCB staff and a young professional in the book industry is exciting enough! But throw in a trip to Book Expo America and I call myself one of the luckiest people ever. Most of us develop a love for books at an early age. For only some, does that love translate into a career path. This was my first experience at Book Expo America, and not only was I able to reconnect with friends and former colleagues, but I was also able to meet many other members of the publishing industry, and learn about a lot of cool, new books—all while helping the rest of the RH gang celebrate our portfolio of talented and inspiring authors! Random House had a jammed packed booth on exhibit, which was often filled with loyal fans waiting to meet our authors, who were signing their latest books or advanced copies of upcoming releases. Check out the pictures below to get a sense of the excitement that I saw coming from the Random House Children’s Books booth during this fun-filled week!

Renowned supermodel, TV personality, and all-around do-gooder, Tyra Banks, signed chapter samplers of her fiction debut, Modelland, which publishes this September. Modelland is the first in a three-book series, and centers on an awkward teen girl who gets selected to attend the exclusive Modelland academy, where magical Intoxibellas, the world’s best models, are trained.
The final installment to Christopher Paolini’s beloved Inheritance series, also called Inheritance will make its long awaited debut on November 8, 2011. At BEA, Christopher was awarded a plaque by the Guinness Book of World Records for being their youngest bestselling author! Here, Christopher smiles for the camera with long time editor, Michelle Frey.
Alan Mendelsohn, Director of Field Sales for Random House Children’s Books, and bestselling author, Judy Sierra at the RHCB party on the NY landmark, the Intrepid. The zoo animals in Judy’s Wild About Books will take center stage again this coming August, in a song-and-dance extravaganza called Zoozical!
On the Intrepid, I stopped by to say hello to the very talented (and very silly), Jeanne Birdsall. Jeanne’s latest addition to the Penderwicks series, the Penderwicks at Point Mouette went on sale last month, just in time for her adoring fans to enjoy during the summer!
YA fiction icon, Lauren Kate, ended her busy and exciting meet and greet with fans by taking a photo with her Random House editors, Beverly Horowitz and Wendy Loggia. The next title in Lauren’s bestselling Fallen series, Passion, will go on sale, next Tuesday, June 14th!
This represents only a bit of the excitement from the week. There were many more celebrated authors in attendance, including Mary Pope Osborne, Natalie Pope Boyce, David Levithan, Rob Buyea, Jennifer Donnelly, N.D. Wilson, James Dashner, Michael Scott and debut author Lissa Price (look for Starters in 2012)! To find out more about their upcoming releases or appearances in your area, please view their pages on www.randomhouse.com.
